County Spelling Tournament

The Lyman Gilmore Middle School Bombers 7th and 8th Grade Spelling Team took first place in the Nevada County Spelling Tournament on Thursday 11/14/19 at the Miner's Foundry in Nevada City.  The team consisted of 7th Graders Joselyn Zarate-Pineda and Stella Collins, as well as 8th Graders Noah Cotter, Isaac Massam and Molly Hope.  6th Grade Teacher Doug Harmon coached the team and accompanied them on their quest to repeat as Nevada County Spelling Champions and to bring home the trophy for the third time in four years.  The team started out strong, posting two perfect rounds in a row to finish the second round as the only team with a perfect 80 out of 80 words spelled correctly.  The third round remained a dominating round for the Bomber Spellers, as they cruised to the finish line missing only two words total for a 38 out of 40 and a first place trophy.  All five individual spellers qualified for the Semi-Finals or the spell of to make the Semi-finals.  Ultimately making the stage for the individual spelling bee were Isaac Massam, Noah Cotter, and Molly Hope.  All three finished in the top ten of the tournament, and both Massam and Cotter took home a third place ribbon.  A big congratulations to our 7th and 8th Grade Bomber Spellers for their dominating finish at the Nevada County Spelling Tournament!
