5th and 6th grade Spelling Tournament


The Lyman Gilmore Middle School Bombers 5th and 6th Grade Spelling Team took 2nd place in the Nevada County Spelling Tournament on Wednesday 11/13/19 at the Miner's Foundry in Nevada City.  The team was comprised of 5th Graders Oliver Massam and Kiernan Hayes, and 6th Graders Isabell Colbert, Rex Levinson, and Carson Horn.  The team was coached by, and accompanied to the tournament by 6th Grade teacher Doug Harmon.  In addition to placing 2nd as a team, individual spellers Oliver Massam and Isabell Colbert finished the team competition with a perfect score.  This qualified Massam and Colbert for the semifinals of the tournament where they duelled with seven other spellers for the chance to represent Nevada County in State Spelling Bee in Stockton, on May 9, 2019.  Massam ultimately took 2nd place and earned a trip to Stockton as one of Nevada County's two student representatives for the State Spelling Bee.  Colbert placed 4th overall, spelling a number of difficult words with ease.  Congratulations to the 5th and 6th grade Bombers for their exciting finish at the Nevada County Spelling Tournament!!!
